Skilled Nursing Facilities are often referred to as “Nursing Homes.” They are unique in the senior care spectrum because they are for anyone who requires 24-hour nursing care and supervision. Some people have medical conditions that are too advanced for Independent or Assisted Living communities to manage and they need to be in a Skilled Nursing Facility.
There are both Short Term stays (typically covered by Medicare and subject to the rules of Medicare) and Long Term stays. Short-term stays are typically considered “Rehab,” but long-term stays are not covered by Medicare. Long-term stays are for people needing long-term nursing care that cannot be treated at an assisted living community. It may be considered custodial care.
